Ata Berkol — ( Turkish, b.1996 )

I am an artist with a painting, mark making and material studies practice.

My practice aims to contest the transformation of opinions, identity and memory in and out of the confines of domestic spaces. My works are characterized by the focus on recognition. By employing domestic objects I identify, or remember, a spectrum of urban middle class mentality from warm to cold.

In the form of civic intervention, I make work documenting contact with communal and private urban cultural spaces.

The air of change from a mosque fountain to ornamental carpets or dinner tables.

Calm spaces transformed by intrusive tensions so subtly lying underneath that they may escape those who do not take the time to explore how and why they may be haunting long after you’ve been subjected to them.

I currently live and work in Chicago.
